A Note to the Reader

My father, Richard "Dick" Morris, passed away on November 28, 2025. For the last several years of his life, he worked on writing "his book" documenting his memories of working on the Gambit satellite program in the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's. He never finished this book, and this website reflects what he had completed when he passed.

I found all the Microsoft Word documents and converted them into this website. My father was not a professional author, and this work reflects his efforts to get his thoughts and memories down without worrying about editing or proofreading. To that end, I have not spellchecked or corrected any errors, and the text is the original state when he last worked on it several months before he died.

In several cases, I couldn't quite determine what he meant by the text. In most cases, I think he was just creating an outline of future topics, ideas, chapters, or sections, which he intended to fill in later. When you see text that looks...

like this, that's an indication that I think this text should be considered an unfinished outline or portion.

To my knowledge, my father never picked a title for the book, so I came up with Memories of a Satellite Engineer. More than anything else, this unfinished book reflects my father's amazing memory. Almost everything he wrote he just remembered, without consulting any additional sources. I think you'll be amazed how he remembered his career and events in such fine detail: what specific bits meant in a command, how a certain time delay was 13.8 seconds, and so on.

Lastly, at various places in the work, he writes something like "perhaps a future reader will be able to provide a clarification." If you have any information you'd like to share, I'd welcome your memory, feedback, or correction, and I'll do my best to try to incorporate it into this site. Or, if you'd like to share anything else or reach out for any reason, please email me at kmo.morris@gmail.com.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy this.
